The topic aims to provide students with knowledge of: the anatomy, physiology and normal development of the human auditory system, basic pathology with particular reference to the auditory system, the genetics of hearing loss, at an introductory level, the epidemiology and major causes of hearing loss, acoustic and statistical principles underlying behavioural tests and acoustic measures, psychological principles underlying hearing and its measurement, acoustical, linguistic and other characteristics of human communication, normal communication development in children. The topic will also introduce critical appraisal and evidence based practice.
