LLIR9519 Transnational Crime and the International Criminal Justice System

The topic aims to offer students a comprehensive discussion on current issues in international criminal justice, providing a coherent theoretical framework for approaching increasingly prominent discourses and the reality of transnational crime.

The way transnational crime is addressed reflects a dominant western view of law enforcement and human rights. This topic will introduce the concept of transnational moral entrepreneur and will look at how it applies in international debates on forms of transnational crimes. Each week, a different issue in transnational criminal justice is introduced and discussed in depth.

This topic aims to broaden students' understanding of the principles and cases of international criminal justice relevant to globalisation, transnational crime and cooperation among transnational criminal justice actors. Students are required to read broadly and constantly, and to read quality newspapers in order to engage effectively with topic material.

1. Explain selected issues of transnational crime and their implications using a coherent theoretical and contextual framework
2. Identify key themes in International Criminal Justice
3. Show awareness of the ways in which international criminal justice system has sought to tackle matters of transnational crimes
4. Identify the key UN protocols and conventions in this field
5. Understand the role and impact of the ‘transnational moral entrepreneur’ in shaping debates at international level
6. Present reasoned arguments for adopting a particular position in relation to these themes
7. Demonstrate familiarity with a range of research tools to access information related to the subject matter
