An introduction to engineering such as can be obtained in ENGR1401 Professional Skills. An understanding of the technical aspects of engineering work, as may be obtained through completing a substantial part of the first 2 years of an engineering course.

Topic description

This topic employs a cross-disciplinary approach to build the technical competence and business acumen to manage large-scale engineering projects and project teams within engineering organisations. It presents professional engineering practices as related to project management. It focuses on building skills in: project management, risk management, intellectual property and engineering legal issues, project financial analysis, quality management, Industry 4.0, and managing projects in regulatory environments.

Educational aims

This topic will require students to apply concepts of the management of engineering projects and organisations, with particular emphasis on analysing large industry, complex, and/or interdisciplinary projects. It includes application of the tools learned and challenges faced, in contemporary engineering practice and modern industry programs through project-based work.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply the business, culture and management of engineering and technological organisation, and the project life cycle
  2. Synthesise the nature of science and engineering projects and the manner in which they are initiated, planned and managed
  3. Appraise the impact of quality, cost and timeliness in project performance
  4. Consider the responsibilities, roles, attitudes, values, priorities, judgement and work methods of practising professional engineering managers
  5. Gather and analyse information and data to determine the principal internal and external issues affecting engineering management and practice
  6. Communicate with project stakeholders effectively and professionally
  7. Critically review the relevant literature or data to identify a key project management issue, and take the first steps to analyse and resolve the issue
