Topic description

This topic applies the systems engineering approach to engineering products and programs to students’ previous knowledge. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of emerging technologies and new products. Systems engineering is described in the context of the modern product life cycle, and concepts are introduced through the lens of ethical engineering practice. The topic also introduces the integration of innovation management into the systems engineering framework, including the tools, techniques, and strategies to manage innovation on the individual, team, and organisational levels.

Educational aims

This topic will require students to apply the systems engineering framework for product and technology development through project-based learning. Systems engineering further challenges students to integrate systems engineering with modern engineering practice and professional ethics, along with innovation management in the systems engineering process.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

  1. Apply systems engineering concepts to the lifecycle of engineering products and complex projects
  2. Apply the systems engineering tools and analysis to projects relevant to the student’s discipline
  3. Evaluate the interface of systems engineering with engineering project management
  4. Apply innovation management concepts to product development life cycles
  5. Explore professional engineering practice regarding ethical and regulatory boundaries
  6. Examine the interaction of engineering ethics with the design process
  7. Communicate with project stakeholders effectively using professional oral and written communications
  8. Sensitively and competently interact with the indigenous issues inherent in engineering practice and develop an ability to interact with indigenous peoples on engineering projects
