Assumed knowledge
This topic assumes second year level molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology and genetics, and an understanding of the commercial, legal and social context within which biotechnology operates.
Topic description
Medical Biotechnology is the use of biological systems, living organisms or their derivates to address health issues. Medical Biotechnologists develop innovative solutions in areas such as diagnostics, medical products (e.g. drug discovery) and medical procedures. This topic exposes students to a range of cutting-edge Medical Biotechnology practices and areas of research. The topic also involves students in the process of applying their scientific, cultural and commercial knowledge to solve a medical problem and deliver a health product.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:

  • Convey the breadth of interacting disciplines that comprise Medical Biotechnology.

  • Describe in-depth examples and illustrative case-studies representative of key areas of Medical Biotechnology.

  • Explain how core scientific concepts and practical techniques are applied in Medical Biotechnology.

  • Develop problem-solving and team work skills that incorporate culturally inclusive practices, especially as regards Indigenous groups and other stakeholders.

Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:

  • Transfer and apply core concepts drawn from cellular biology, molecular biology, microbiology, chemistry and biochemistry to develop innovative solutions to address health issues including diagnostics, medical products and medical procedures.

  • Describe and discuss the breadth of interacting disciplines that comprise Medical Biotechnology and present examples of how they can be harnessed to improve health.

  • Synthesise information and communicate effectively, succinctly and sensitively with the scientific community, clients, the broad public and particular cultural and Indigenous communities about medical biotechnology products.

  • Work in teams using medical biotechnology principles.
