This topic helps students to develop their oral, written, critical reasoning and teamwork skills for use in study and the workplace. It will develop their general and academic communication skills within the specific context of their course of study. The subjects covered include English grammar, syntax and idiom; summary writing; critical response; persuasive techniques; reporting direct speech, paraphrasing, referencing and essay writing; technical writing; report writing and document preparation; and writing for different audiences.

This topic aims to:

develop the skills and understanding necessary for effective oral and written communication in academic and professional settings
introduce students to the diversity of communication styles for different audiences
emphasise the use of plain, concise, accurate English in writing documents for academic and professional fields
revise English usage, grammar, syntax, punctuation, composition and editing
examine and produce typical academic and professional texts from a variety of sources
address how to critically assess and write persuasive and logical arguments for a variety of audiences

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

write persuasively for a range of audiences
analyse argument and provide a critical response orally and in writing
understand and respond to expectations of an academic and professional environment
edit their own and others written work
identify and correct grammatical errors
identify and discuss ethical issues
work effectively as a member of a team
