In this topic students will explore clinical decision making in disaster health care environments and implications for future practice. They will focus on the clinical needs across the disaster cycle and response team welfare.

The aim of this topic is to enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to plan and implement strategies to manage disaster situations and apply their knowledge and skills to a wide range of circumstances, including unexpected clinical challenges.

On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

explain the purpose and process of needs assessment to plan and implement a disaster management plan
compare the issues associated with provision of everyday clinical care with that provided in a disaster setting,
discuss the clinical, social and psychological aspects of response team welfare and care while responding to a disaster
critically analyse issues associated with managing acute clinical presentations with limited resources
critically analyse the management of physical and psychosocial comorbidities within the disaster setting
plan and implement health strategies for managing disaster situations
