Topic description
In this topic students will critically reflect on and evaluate their own practice and that of the response team following a previous deployment to a disaster setting.

To enrol in this topic, the student must have been deployed to a declared disaster as part of an Australian government team (or approved equivalent) within the past two (2) years.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Improve student's ability to critically reflect on and evaluate their own practice and that of their response teams during deployment to a disaster setting in order to improve the effectiveness of disaster responses.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • identify and critique the cultural impacts of a deployed health care team in a disaster setting

  • critically reflect on their own practice when deployed in any disaster setting

  • discuss the management of the health and wellbeing of the team and all its members in all phases of the disaster response

  • analyse the role of debriefing techniques in the disaster setting.

  • perform an internal evaluation of a disaster response from the perspective of the responding agency.
