Topic description
This topic enables students to achieve advanced knowledge, skills and attitudes for surgical and anaesthetic practice in disaster deployment situations.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to enable students to achieve advanced knowledge of surgical and anaesthetic practice in disaster deployment situations and to apply this knowledge in a range of practical and academic contexts.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic, students will be able to:
- critically analyse the epidemiological, legal and ethical issues that pertain to a disaster response
- identify and discuss non-surgical clinical considerations in the management of mass casualties
- critically analyse surgical and anaesthetic techniques
- critically analyse anaesthetic techniques and risks in an austere/disaster environment
- apply resource management principles to the surgical management of mass casualties.
