Topic description
This topic examines the biological, psychological and behavioural nature of sensory, physical and multiple disabilities and examines the educational, support and management strategies required for effective learning and community participation.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to learn about:

  • Concepts, knowledge and skills relating to the identification, assessment and management of individuals living with sensory impairment and/or physical and multiple disability.

  • Approaches to developing planned interventions to support learning and participation in meaningful activities for individuals living with sensory and/or physical and multiple disabilities.

  • Educational and intervention strategies that form the basis of programs and interventions for individuals living with sensory and/or physical and multiple disabilities.

  • Effective ways of delivering inclusive education, supports and interventions to individuals living with sensory, physical and multiple disabilities.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. describe the functions of the human nervous system and the extent to which impairment contributes to sensory, physical and/or multiple disability

  2. demonstrate advanced understanding of the effect of sensory, physical and multiple disabilities on an individual’s development

  3. demonstrate an understanding of the ethical administration, scoring and interpretation of clinical assessments for people with sensory, physical and multiple disabilities

  4. recognise and discuss the characteristics and needs of individuals living with sensory, physical and multiple disabilities, as well as outline with case examples education, support and/or management interventions designed to develop the individual’s learning, skills and participation in meaningful activities

  5. describe, critically analyse and evaluate research outcomes on approaches to delivering inclusive education and/or other support to individuals living sensory, physical and multiple disabilities.
