Topic description
In this second semester cultural topic, students consider issues relating to French culture and society as illustrated in a selection of authentic written, aural and/or visual texts. Students may be offered a choice of monographic studies relating to contemporary or earlier texts.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • expose students to further past and contemporary cultural and societal issues

  • provide further opportunities for the development or consolidation of students' background knowledge of socio-cultural issues related to French and/or Francophone arts, literature and society

  • further develop learners' critical and analytical skills through the study of contemporary or earlier texts, and foster students' involvement in individual research projects
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic, students will be able to:

  • summarise and illustrate historical, artistic and social developments related to the cultural component, and use them as context for the interpretation, comparison and critique of texts

  • identify and organise relevant research material in order to produce sound academic texts
