Topic description
Simulation has become mainstream in healthcare education and its use is increasing rapidly. This topic explores the requirements of educationally-sound simulation in education and training of healthcare professionals. It will provide students with knowledge and skills essential to plan, conduct and evaluate scenarios relevant to needs of participants. The experience of other industries that use simulation and recent research on simulation in healthcare is used to identify limitations as well as advantages of simulation. Ultimately, this simulation knowledge is applied by students in practical sessions.

The topic is not aligned to any particular simulation technology or platform and all aspects of simulation are included. Important aspects of simulationfacility operations will be included and also simulation research.
Educational aims
This topics aims to introduce students to the key elements of effective use of simulation in clinical education so that they can use simulation effectively in teaching health professions.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the major advantages and disadvantages of using simulation in education

  2. Outline the components of the "Simulation Cycle" and the key features of each of them.

  3. Explain how the symbiotic model of education in healthcare assists simulation

  4. Create and validate a scenario that meets an identified curriculum objective

  5. Set-up and supervise a scenario

  6. Identify good performance in a scenario and diagnose causes of sub-optimal performance

  7. Facilitate a post-simulation debrief (after action review)

  8. Obtain objective feedback and use to improve simulation.
