Topic description
This topic advances and consolidates students' expanding knowledge of the biological and psychological processes that initiate, change and maintain a range of common and severe psychological disorders. The topic is delivered online through a series of interactive modules. The topic explores several areas: cognitive and neurobiological processes; aetiology of psychological disorders; cognitive therapies; and critical perspectives in applied research processes.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with a sound knowledge of the aetiological theories and neurobiological processes that influence the development and progression of psychological disorders. Students will gain further knowledge of applied research in the area of CBT and psychological disorders. The topic covers: neurobiological processes; limbic and autonomic nervous systems; severe psychological disorders, in particular, trauma; and cognitive models and theories.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of the topic students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact neurobiological processes have on cognitions.

  • Develop case conceptualisations for psychological disorders using cognitive therapy frameworks.

  • Identify specific cognitive and behavioural treatment models for each psychological disorder.

  • Contribute meaningfully towards improving access to evidence-based models of mental health care.
