Topic description
Students will cover the specific forms of research commonly used in psychotherapy. They will gain knowledge and experience of quantitative and qualitative research design, methodology, ethics, measurement and analysis of data.
Educational aims
The emphasis in this topic is on the student as a psychotherapist; being able to understand, devise and critically evaluate his or her own research. At the end of the topic the student will have an understanding of research in psychotherapy and be able to appreciate, analyse and utilise such research and produce a research protocol based upon their current practice. Again the concept of evidence-based practice will be considered and the issues related to producing research such as the ethics approval process will be taken into account.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate research literature in the area of mental health and psychotherapy

2. Apply the results of research in an informed manner to their clinical practice.

3. Design and evaluate a research protocol.

4. Appreciate the ethical issues in research and demonstrate a sound understanding of the purpose of the Committee for Clinical Investigations or comparable research ethics committees.
