Topic description
The topic is designed to be interdisciplinary and the case examples and assessment requirements are not focussed on any particular discipline. The content is also designed to heighten the awareness of the various contributions that all health care workers make to the holistic care of person living with a life limiting illness. The topic is divided into several sections; the limitations of palliative care, the assessment and clinical management of less commonly encountered symptoms in an evidence-based framework, the diagnosis and management of common palliative care emergencies, practical and legal aspects involved in death and dying and the principles of rehabilitation in the palliative context.
Educational aims
This topic is designed to provide further opportunities for health care professionals to broaden their knowledge and understanding of a number of aspects of palliative clinical management.
Expected learning outcomes
Students will demonstrate that they can:

  • Identify several limits to the provision of palliative care

  • Describe the pathophysiology of less common symptoms in palliative care and outline the systematic assessment and evidenced-based management of these

  • Describe the pathophysiology, assessment and evidenced-based management of common emergencies within the palliative care context.

  • Analyse the practical, legal and ethical considerations relating to death and dying

  • Describe the ways in which rehabilitation principles can be applied to the palliative care context.

  • Identify own ongoing learning needs
