Topic description
This topic is about the governance of public service projects. Students will learn about the choices that governments must make in delivering goods and services to the public and about the values that inform those choices. The topic will cover some of the technical aspects of project delivery, such as objective setting, project definition, procurement, and evaluation, but the focus will be on understanding the political context in which public sector projects are managed.
Educational aims
This topic exposes students to the issues and challenges faced by project managers in the public sector. Students will explore theories of public service delivery and will learn to connect theory to practical application.
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • Understand key challenges facing governments in delivering goods and services to the public.
  • Understand how theoretical issues of project governance can be applied to real-life examples.
  • Undertake a formal analysis of a developed research question in the area of public sector project management.
