Topic description
This topic will review in detail the underlying concepts and evidence base for contemporary rehabilitation. In particular students will analyse the holistic assessment of rehabilitation needs with patients and the evidence base for key aspects including motivation, goal setting and teamwork. Students will apply these concepts by analysing the delivery of a rehabilitation service and also in case studies. Students will review key outcome measures for both individual rehabilitation progress and for service delivery.
Educational aims
This topic aims to review in detail the underlying concepts and evidence base for contemporary rehabilitation. The topic also aims to extend the student’s skills in critical thinking and effective writing.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students should be able to:

  • assess and identify a patient's rehabilitation needs

  • describe best-practice in delivering a rehabilitation service and analyse a rehabilitation service using this knowledge

  • review the evidence for key features of rehabilitation including patient-centeredness, team work, goal setting and motivation and apply these concepts to case studies

  • measure outcomes in rehabilitation both at individual and service levels
