Topic description
The topic has three content areas: basic counselling skills; key elements of major counselling approaches; and exploration of professional and counselling issues in the clinical rehabilitation setting.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with an understanding of the processes of counselling and education in rehabilitation. The skills necessary for effective counselling and personal management will be examined with a particular focus on counselling, interventions and support which improve or maximise the quality of life of clients/patients for whom the student has a responsibility. The topic involves both theoretical and practical approaches to the counselling and rehabilitation process.
Expected learning outcomes
Students must demonstrate:

  1. An understanding of the different counselling processes

  2. An understanding of how effective counselling skills can be applied in a rehabilitation context

  3. Weekly practice and rehearsal of skills presented in the FLO Activities and Readings
