Topic description
This topic will include areas of pulmonary rehabilitation including disease management and guidelines for management, assessment techniques, program design and evaluation, exercise, nutrition, medications, breathing techniques, psychosocial issues and the role of palliative care.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with an opportunity to:

  • Increase their understanding of the key elements in the rehabilitation of a people with a respiratory disease.

  • Develop the skills required to develop and deliver a rehabilitation program for a person who has respiratory disease.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students should have:

  • The ability to develop and implement pulmonary rehabilitation programs

  • Knowledge of an evidence-based background to the practice of pulmonary rehabilitation

  • Awareness of appropriate methods of patient assessment

  • An understanding of the clinical context for the use of pulmonary rehabilitation within respiratory disease management

  • An ability to apply guidelines for pulmonary rehabilitation

  • A generic understanding of multidisciplinary educational topics that may be included within a pulmonary rehabilitation program

  • A basic understanding of exercise training programs

  • Awareness of different models for the delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation

  • An understanding of basic program evaluation

  • An understanding of the scientific and theoretical rationale for program structure and implementation
