Topic description
This topic reviews pressing social questions by examining the relations between personal identity and modern institutions through an introduction to modern sociology and social theory. Considering how cultural experiences of love, death and power are shaped by both personal and social forces the topic introduces students to the sociological approaches of several contemporary social theorists.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide:
  • a solid introduction to sociological ways of thinking and analysis
  • a grounding in social theory necessary for further study
Expected learning outcomes
On successful completion of this topic students should be able to:
  • critically evaluate theories and research on contemporary society
  • appraise connections between personal identities and modern institutions
  • show familiarity with important sociological approaches, amongst others, of Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman, Michel Foucault, Ulrich Beck and Charles Lemert
