Topic description
The topic provides foundational skills in the critical examination of the Writings of the Hebrew Bible. The nature of biblical Hebrew Poetry will be explored along with the historical and cultural contexts which gave rise to these texts. Special attention will be given to particular texts in any given year, including the Book of Psalms, Job, or the Song of Songs. A range of texts from the Writings will be selected for exegesis.
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with the opportunity to

  • examine the distinctive nature of the Writings in the Hebrew Bible

  • demonstrate critical analysis of scriptures and the ability to prepare an exegesis

  • develop skills in the critical evaluation of the scholarly literature in the field of Biblical Studies

  • examine contemporary missional, preaching and liturgical implications of the Writings
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss the literary and historical issues surrounding the Writings of the Hebrew Bible critically

  • demonstrate advanced skills in exegesis, including the ability to select appropriate critical tools for the text

  • research, evaluate and present reasoned discussion in support of arguments at an advanced level

  • examine critically the theology of a given text and be aware of issues with regard to application of the text to a contemporary context
