Topic description
This topic provides foundational knowledge of the Gospel of John and the Johannine Epistles. Students will utilise a range of methodologies, including narrative, historical, social scientific, and feminist criticisms to examine a range of texts and analyse critically the theological implications in both historical and contemporary contexts.Students will consolidate knowledge and skills in the exegesis of Biblical texts. An optional Greek component is available
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
- evaluate the historical and cultural contexts in which the Johannine literature was written
- analyse the Johannine literature in relation to the synoptic gospels
- examine theoretical issues related to literary and socio-rhetorical questions that arise from exegesis of the texts
- explore connections between these writings and contemporary issues
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- Analyse the structure, themes and distinctive features of the Gospel of John
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theoretical issues raised by the Johannine epistles
- demonstrate the application of the critical analysis of scriptures and the ability to prepare an exegesis
- communicate the relevance of Johannine texts, both verbally and in writing, for a range of audiences
