This topic is a study tour of the Middle East, prepared for by two day-long seminars and independent study.

The aim is for students to gain analytical and critical skills in the study of the religious, political, economic and cultural milieu of Ancient Israel, and of Jesus and his followers in the first century. Through study in situ participants will become familiar with the geography and archaeology of Israel and the Middle East, and develop the skills to evaluate the milieu in which the Old and New Testaments were written.

This topic aims to:

analyse the cultural milieu of the Mediterranean world, in which the Bible was written, critically
evaluate ancient and early Christian sites and analyse their contributions to the reading of the biblical texts and early Church documents
provide foundational theoretical skills to understand and map the growth of early Christianity
identify and evaluate the different cultural scripts of ancient circum-Mediterranean people and contemporary Westerners
develop skills to identify and analyse contributions of the different faith and cultural communities in the Middle East

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

demonstrate foundational skills in interpreting key texts foundational for the Christian Church
identify and critique relevant primary and secondary sources, including archaeological and geographical sources
analyse the religious, political, economic and cultural milieu of Ancient Israel, and of Jesus and his followers in the first century.
evaluate the different cultural, social and religious values that people bring into theological conversation.
