Topic description
In this topic students will be involved in the contemporary retrieval of the theology of the Trinity as a practical doctrine. The topic will involve analysis of the implications of trinitarian theology in the context of the issues that confront us at the beginning of the 21st Century. The theology of the Trinity will be studied in three stages, its biblical origins, its development in the patristic and medieval eras, and its contemporary retrieval.
Educational aims
The aims of this topic are to:
- evaluate the biblical origins, and the patristic and medieval development of the understandings of Trinity
- analyse the contemporary retrieval of the theology of the doctrine of the Trinity as a practical doctrine
- examine the implications of Trinitarian theology for the 21st century, including such issues as inter-personal communion, ecclesiology, ecology, and a relational view of reality
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:
- examine history of the emergence of the doctrine of God as Trinity, and analyse its progression from its biblical foundations through patristic and medieval development, to its contemporary expressions
- illustrate and defend such practical implications of the doctrine as 'Being-in-relationship', thereby demonstrating the relevance of the doctrine as well as its practical benefits
- analyse critically and evaluate the implications of Trinitarian theology for issues of concern in the 21st century, such as interpersonal communion, ecclesiology, ecology, and relational views of reality
- communicate, both verbally and in writing, to a range of audiences
