Topic description
This topic builds on students’ foundational studies, and progresses them to an intermediate level study of Biblical (Koine) Greek. Lexicon, grammar, syntax and idiomatic usage of the language are studied via the reading of more complex passages from the New Testament and the Septuagint. An introduction to textual criticism is given.
Educational aims
This topic aims to

  • extend student’s skills in reading and translating passages from the New Testament and Septuagint

  • develop their use of lexicographical aids to assist in translation and parsing
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • translate more complex passages from the Greek New Testament, with appropriate lexicographical aids

  • critically analyse the nuances of biblical (Koine) Greek texts

  • show advanced skills in the relationship between English and Greek, and be able to accurately, and culturally appropriately, translate set texts
