Topic description
This topic examines the organisational structure of festivals and events and outlines strategies for event planning and site or venue management. It also explains and analyses event planning and site management and examines the expectations of both the producers and audiences. The topic also discusses financial management strategies as they relate to festival and event management. The topic researches and analyses the principles of evaluation and the use of evaluation data in festival and event design and management practice.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • identify the key factors involved in the staging of successful festivals and events and to develop appropriate implementation strategies

  • discuss and examine the role of various authorities in festivals and events

  • investigate the basic budget planning and financial management requirements of festival and event management

  • provide students with skills and methodology to conduct quantitative and qualitative evaluation by applying the principles of evaluation at appropriate stages of festival and event design and management
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • identify the appropriate organisational structure and planning strategies for the successful staging of a festival or event and the relevant authorities required as part of those strategies

  • use a simple event budget as a planning tool and to develop a cashflow and basic financial spreadsheets for the effective financial management of a festival or event

  • develop appropriate evaluation methodology and to apply the data obtained in the planning and implementation of a range of festivals and events
