Topic description
The topic is designed to introduce students to the concepts and principles of business and strategic planning and their application in the tourism or event industries. It will provide opportunities for students to apply these principles to a range of projects and businesses connected with the tourism or event sectors.

The topic will introduce each stage of business planning including goal setting, situation analysis, organisational response and evaluation, leading to the development of an overall business plan suitable for a new venture business or an early stage innovation project in the tourism or event sectors.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  1. Introduce the concepts and principles of strategic and business planning for both tourism and event sectors

  2. Develop student understanding of the role and application of the essential concepts and stages of strategic and business planning and the importance of innovation

  3. Develop student analytical, conceptual and creative thinking skills relevant to business, design and planning

  4. Provide a holistic learning experience enabling students to be entrepreneurial and innovative through pitching a business idea and creating a new business in tourism or event sectors.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Discuss familiarity with the concepts and principles of strategic and business planning

  2. Identify appropriate objectives and strategies for business or projects in a sector relevant to their area of study

  3. Apply their knowledge of business planning concepts and principles to real world examples

  4. Develop a business plan to achieve a desired outcome.
