Topic description
This topic is designed to provide students with practical experience working in the events and tourism industry. It requires a minimum of 160 hours over a minimum of 4 working weeks. The total duration will be determined by the operator providing the experience in consultation with the topic coordinator and the student. As part of this topic students will put their theoretical learning into practice, develop an understanding of a tourism workplace, expand their professional networks and enhance their employment opportunities.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide practical experience working in the events and tourism industry

  • develop an empathy with, understanding of and relevant experience in the day to day issues confronting operators in the events and tourism industry

  • foster an appropriate work ethic during the course of the Industry Placement

  • provide a practical understanding of the skills, knowledge and attitudes required in operating an event and tourism business
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • apply skills and knowledge acquired in their course in a practical environment

  • evaluate the placement as a tourism provider

  • analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the placement (and project), whilst reconciling the obligations, responsibilities and actions of practitioners with their own values

  • display a high level of professionalism and commitment towards Industry Placement - before, during and on completion of the actual placement

  • formally communicate their industry placement experience to others
