Topic description
This topic is designed to provide students with an understanding of current issues that are affecting, shaping and influencing the global tourism industry such as pro-poor tourism, screen-tourism/tourism and the media, medical tourism, e-tourism, sustainable development of tourism, eco-tourism. The range of issues to be covered within the topic will be determined annually, based on contemporary developments within the near and far environments of the tourism industry.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide students with opportunities to understand a range of contemporary issues and key problems, and their impact on the tourism industry and research

  • discuss relevant underpinning academic concepts and theories that can be used to analyse and evaluate the issues

  • develop students' understanding of the implications of current issues for the strategic management of tourism organisations

  • enhance students' written and oral communication skills suitable for progress in the tourism profession
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will be able to:

  • explore a range of contemporary issues and their impact on the tourism industry and research

  • demonstrate an understanding of the implications of key issues for tourism strategic management and marketing

  • assess critically the utility of contemporary research in the context of the management of tourism enterprises

  • evaluate a range of competing perspectives relating to various issues affecting the development of the tourism industry

  • further improve their oral and written skills suitable for progress in tourism profession
