This topic is about how the English language works. It aims to familiarise students with the structure of English, increase their awareness of the function of English, and create a basic understanding of how English works for the purposes of classroom practice.

This topic aims to:

• familiarise students with the structure of the English language

• increase students' awareness of the function of English

• create a basic understanding of the how English works for the purpose for classroom practice

• develop a critical approach to own and others teaching of English

On completion of this topic students will be able to:

• describe the structure of the English language

• define the form and function of the English language

• explain how to use knowledge of the form and function of the English language in classroom practice

• synthesise knowledge of the form and function of the English language into own classroom practice

• critically evaluate their own and others' classroom practice in terms of the form and function of the English language
