The Flinders Centre for Cancer Prevention and Control (FCCPC) is a network of scientists, clinicians and other practitioners whose shared vision is to reduce the impact and burden of cancer on the Australian community through excellence in cancer research and the translation of research into practice.
The FCCPC’s focus is on control of cancer through all available means but especially prevention and early detection. Our multidisciplinary research programs are tackling the problem of cancer at many stages including:
In addition to the latest molecular and cellular techniques, FCCPC members have research expertise in clinical trials, longitudinal clinical research, epidemiology, population studies, behavioural research, and health outcomes research, and are applying these skills and methodologies to the prevention and control of bowel, oesophageal, cervical, breast, prostate and haematological cancers.
Through partnership with service providers, especially Flinders Medical Centre, and Repatriation General Hospital (RGH) the FCCPC’s research and academic activities are integrated with the clinical, translational and health system agendas, therefore improving translation of research into practice and maximizing the opportunities to improve patient outcomes. The unique combination of laboratory, clinical and population health expertise, together with access to patients and high quality clinical services enables us to facilitate true multi-disciplinary research in cancer prevention and control.
Flinders University researchers expect to have clear evidence by the end of this year on the role that the humble cow could play in boosting the anti-cancer properties of the natural trace element, selenium.
In a ground-breaking human trial now underway, a research team led by Professor Graeme Young is testing the beneficial impact that selenium delivered through cow’s milk has in preventing bowel cancer compared with other forms of the dietary supplement.
The FCCPC is also the research arm of the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer (FCIC), an integrated cancer centre that focuses on innovative prevention strategies, clinical, biomedical and translational research and holistic patient care.
The FCIC is a joint venture between Flinders University, Flinders Medical Centre (FMC) and the FMC Foundation and will occupy a state-of-the-art building to be constructed adjacent to Flinders Medical Centre commencing in early 2009.
