Students commencing this topic should have some familiarity with strategic planning or have completed the topic EDES9609 Strategic Planning and Management or EDUC9601 Strategic Thinking and Planning.
Topic description
This topic enables students to explore the different dimensions and characteristics of knowledge within organisations so that knowledge can be effectively harnessed to promote the achievement of organisational goals. In this topic, students will investigate different forms of organisational knowledge generation, retention and communication as well as how knowledge strategies affect the diffusion and harnessing of knowledge. The topic is also designed to develop an awareness of how a knowledge-based perspective of organisations will affect organisations in terms of structure, culture, strategy and routine ways of working.
Educational aims
This topic will enable students to:

  • explore the different dimensions and characteristics of knowledge within organisations

  • students will investigate different forms of organisational knowledge generation, retention and communication

  • understand how knowledge strategies affect the diffusion and harnessing of knowledge
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • explain the knowledge-based theory of organisations and different aspects of knowledge

  • construct models of knowledge retention structures, both explicit and tacit, used by organisations

  • formulate strategies to optimally utilise the knowledge in their workplace
