Topic description
This topic introduces students to the concepts and basic tools of different aspects of management in a health setting, with examples from a range of nutrition and dietetic settings. Students will learn about leadership, organisational and human resource management, general management principles, marketing frameworks, project management, introductory budgeting and quality management. International developments in management, personal organisation and expected professional behaviour underlie all aspects of this topic.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to:

  • Introduce students to the theories and concepts of management, organisational skills, quality management and professional behaviours relevant to the practice of nutrition and dietetics.

  • Enable students to understand management principles so that they can translate these into the practice of nutrition and dietetics.

Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be able to:

  • Understand basic theories of organisational management, general management and HR principles, marketing, budgeting, the strategic planning process and leadership.

  • Apply their knowledge to develop a case to justify a program, service, product or procedure, including HR management, simple budgeting and cost control measures.

  • Understand the context and requirements of workplace environments, including the value of ethical and professional behaviour.

  • Apply their knowledge of quality management to develop recommendations for the review of systems, policies or procedures.

  • Apply their knowledge of leadership to communicate effectively to advocate for the role of nutrition and dietetics across inter-professional boundaries.
