Topic description
This topic is only available to ESL students. It replaces the Professional English requirement for those students. An ESL student is defined as a student from a non-English speaking background with an IELTS score of less than 7 who has lived in an English-speaking country for fewer than 5 years and did not attend high school in an English-speaking country or through English as the medium of instruction.

This topic aims to develop the students' skills in oral presentations and English proficiency. It will develop knowledge and the skills required for making presentations in English and require the students to build on the work from English as a Second Language 1, in the use of appropriate grammatical structures, academic structure in writing and vocabulary. In addition, this topic will introduce library research as an integral part of academic work. This topic aims to develop students' understanding of academic English and the skills associated with presenting information in an academic context. It focuses primarily on speaking, writing and library research.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • enable students to communicate effectively in an academic context

  • assist students to generate written and oral assignments based on a process approach to speaking

  • build students' academic vocabulary

  • develop higher level English oral presentation skills
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • plan and present a range of spoken assignments

  • present a set of logically related ideas in spoken and written format

  • utilise language in academic contexts

  • understand and use correct grammatical forms in written English
