Topic description
This is an introductory topic for undergraduate students who intend to work in any health or community-related field. It introduces them to public health issues and approaches through the media and through current policy. The topic provides an opportunity for students to consider these issues at the global level or at the local level within and outside of Australia.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide an understanding of public health. Specifically the aim is to provide students with an understanding of the social model of health and various issues and approaches to public health. These will be explored through the way issues are presented in the media and in policy at the global, national and local level.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of this topic, students are expected to be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social model of health drawing on public health examples

  • Clearly communicate an explanation of public health

  • Identify public health issues in the media

  • Demonstrate an understanding of key contemporary public health policies
