Topic description
This topic has been developed to provide an academic pathway towards becoming an effective and competent leader in the field of education. Leaders and leadership examines the concept of leaders and leadership within organisational settings. Approaches to the study of leadership are investigated and selected models are analysed. There is a significant emphasis on the impact of effective leadership on organisational performance. The topic encourages the development of an individual leadership style based on contemporary leadership theory. The topic is designed to facilitate critical thinking and debate and provide students with the most recent and advanced knowledge in the area of leadership.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • examine the body of literature and address the key issues relating to leaders and leadership
  • provide students with an understanding of the concepts, knowledge and skills necessary for leadership
  • explore current models and perspectives on leadership
  • enable students to pursue areas of interest in the field relating to leadership and management
  • facilitate critical thinking debate relating to issues in leadership and management
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will be able to:

  • discuss traditional theories and concepts of leadership

  • explain the most recently developed leadership philosophies

  • elaborate on leadership as it applies in a range of circumstances and cultures

  • apply leadership concepts through critical thinking and debate

  • examine their own leadership skills in the light of the research

  • discuss individual leadership, team leadership and organisational leadership
