Topic description
This topic introduces students to a range of laboratory skills employed in the collection and analysis of archaeological data from pre-contact and post-contact sites. Analytical methods employed by archaeologists to examine artefacts, ecofacts, and human skeletal remains in the laboratory will be addressed. The emphasis will be on hands-on practical experience.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • provide an introduction to a range of analytical methods employed by archaeologists to examine artefacts, ecofacts, and human skeletal remains in the laboratory

  • improve student understanding of the processes involved in making inferences about human behaviours from items recovered in the field
Expected learning outcomes
It is expected that on completion of this topic students will have an:

  • improved ability to understand and critically assess a range of analytical methods employed in archaeological research

  • improved ability to make inferences about human behaviour from materials recovered during archaeological excavation
