Topic description
This topic will provide students with a practical introduction to the techniques of position fixing, survey, mapping, photography (including video) and detailed recording of underwater and coastal archaeological sites. Lectures, seminars and videos will be presented on various research and practical techniques including excavation and conservation. The first part of the topic will consist of the AIMA/NAS Part 1 Training program. The remainder of the two week intensive topic will comprise practical exercises and seminars on specific themes and subjects in maritime archaeology as well as underwater and coastal archaeology.

Students will need to provide their own SCUBA diving equipment (no tank required) and meals will be self catered.

Note: A fee will be charged to cover AIMA/NAS Part 1 Training costs, accommodation, transport and SCUBA diving costs.
Educational aims
The primary aim of the topic is to introduce students to the practice of maritime archaeology.

More specifically, the topic aims to:

  • introduce students to selected maritime archaeological field skills used in the underwater environment as well as in coastal and inter-tidal settings

  • address the methodologies used in underwater and coastal archaeology

  • teach practical skills and further understanding of maritime archaeology
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will have:

  • developed some of the field skills associated with the practice of maritime archaeology, specifically underwater recording, drawing and photography

  • demonstrated their understanding of the methodological approaches to underwater and coastal archaeology

  • increased their knowledge and understanding of the history and practice of maritime archaeology
