Topic description
This topic will teach students how to participate in ethical and culturally sensitive community archaeology research. The skills that may be taught include research design, collecting oral histories, ethical interactions with community members (including Indigenous groups), rock art recording, site and artefact recording, assessing evidence and mounting a coherent argument, as appropriate to the community archaeology context.

Fees will be charged to cover such things as transport, accommodation and food, based on the location of the field school.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • develop the practical skills necessary to conduct community archaeology field research

  • develop skills in working with community members in archaeology and heritage contexts

  • address ethical dimensions of archaeology

  • develop students recording skills used in archaeological fieldwork, such as site and artefact recording, creating fields maps, and other records
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have:

  • demonstrated the ability to conduct field research with local communities in a professional way

  • developed skills to work and communicate effectively with community members

  • obtained a practical understanding of the ethical dimensions of community archaeology

  • developed recording skills used in community archaeology
