Topic description
This topic provides students with the opportunity to develop their research and laboratory skills, while at the same time allowing them to develop valuable workplace skills. It requires students to undertake 120 hours of volunteer work within the Department of Archaeology. The volunteer work can be in the form of (but not necessarily limited to) such tasks as participating in lab-based research projects, laboratory sorting and analysis, technical officer tasks, and research assistance. Student performance will be evaluated in the workplace by a staff member of the Department of Archaeology, and each student will have a one on one exit interview at the end of their period of volunteer work to disucss what they have learned. This topic will be assessed as a Non graded Pass (NGP).
Educational aims
The aims of the topics are to:

  • provide students with practical experience working in archaeology

  • introduce students to the range of tasks involved in preparing for field based research and in conducting laboratory based archaeological research

  • give students the opportunity to apply their theoretical and classroom based learning in the real world
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:

  • have a basic understanding of the range of tasks that might be required during an archaeological project

  • have an improved understanding of the skills, knowledge and attitudes of people working in the archaeological field

  • acquire a range of skills relevant to the volunteer work they have undertaken

  • be able to describe their practical experiences and articulate the relationship between field practice and class-room based learning
