Topic description
This topic is concerned with the theory and practical application of financial management in publicly traded corporations. The concepts and issues introduced in BUSN9119 Financial Management will be extended to develop a high degree of competency in core corporate finance subjects. Students will develop the knowledge and understanding required to formulate well-justified business solutions to a range of company-level investing, financing and payout decisions. This course will examine a range of applied topics in corporate finance that include real options, corporate acquisitions, corporate restructuring, lease financing and project financing.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:
  1. Develop an understanding of the theoretical foundations that underpin modern corporate finance practice
  2. Integrate corporate finance theory with practical application to facilitate the formulation of well justified advice on corporate finance matters involving real corporate options, corporate acquisitions, corporate restructuring, lease financing and project financing
  3. Develop an awareness of emerging issues and recent trends in the world of corporate finance and how this has impacted on the profession
  4. Be well prepared for undertaking a career in the field of corporate finance

  3. Identify and critically evaluate theories on capital structure choices
  4. Identify and discuss the factors that determine a company’s dividend policy
  5. Discuss the theories on corporate takeovers and its application to practise
  6. Identify and discuss the various types of corporate restructuring events
  7. Identify and critically evaluate the theories on project financing and its application to practise
  8. Discuss the assumptions and limitations of theoretical concepts used to explain corporate finance decisions
