Topic description
This topic introduces students to various aspects and complexities of the environment through the study of a specific environmental problem. The aim is to highlight the need for a broad understanding of the biological, chemical, mathematical and physical sciences for addressing local environmental issues and to gain practice in the techniques associated with investigating environmental problems. The topic combines a multidisciplinary team approach to the solution of these problems, with individual work to summarize the results of investigation in ways clearly accessible to government, industry and society in general.
Educational aims
This topic aims to develop skills in the undertaking of an environmental science project. The central aim of this topic is the development of skills and methods in the design, implementation, write-up, and presentation of a hands-on project. Skills in organising a project, team work, and the analysis of data are also aims of this topic.
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of the topic, students are expected to be able to:
  1. Design and carrying out an environmental investigation
  2. Access data from various sources
  3. Write environmental investigation proposals
  4. Carry out field work and laboratory investigations
  5. Observe and record field data
  6. Analyse, interpret, and present project results
  7. Use data in problem solving
  8. Function in teams
