Topic description
This topic introduces third level students to the current scholarly research practices in English and Creative Writing. Members of staff will provide intensive seminars on their own research projects, exploring current issues, dilemmas and developments in their field. Students will obtain a detailed insight into the different research opportunities offered within the department and produce an essay and research proposal based on one of the seminar topics offered by different staff members. This subject is recommended for students who intend to apply for honours.
Educational aims
This topic aims to help students:

  • develop a complex understanding of the current research practices and expertise of staff available to supervise honours projects

  • plan and propose independent research projects

  • produce an analytical/creative work relating or contributing to a pre-existing research area within the department

  • communicate an understanding of the research culture of the department and how students might contribute to that research culture
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will:

  • have developed a detailed understanding of contemporary research areas in the department and how they contribute to broader international research culture

  • have the capacity to extend their understanding of complex research issues into a proposed program of research

  • have demonstrated a capacity to work independently and collaboratively with staff on a research project
