Topic description
This topic is a component in the honours program for English or Creative Writing students. Thinking About Theory builds on core literary knowledge from undergraduate literature topics: literary theory and its application in interpreting literary texts. In this topic, students will be exposed to a literary theory (or a series of literary theories) which will then be applied to a literary text (or texts).
Educational aims
This topic aims to provide students with:

  • the knowledge of literary theory (and its application) that is required to complete Honours-level work

  • advanced skills in literary analysis
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic students will have gained:

  • skills in literary analysis: advanced, critical reading skills

  • the ability to communicate literary knowledge via written communication/assessment

  • advanced written skills

  • advanced knowledge of criticism/literary theory
