Topic description
This topic forms part of the English honours program for Creative Writing students. Students will engage with aspects of the public culture of writing and writers in Australia and internationally.

Through readings and other forms of media, attention will be drawn to the debates about the function of critics and reviewing, writers' festivals, and other activities of writers in the public sphere. Students will be given the opportunity to write critically in response to these debates.
Educational aims
This topic aims to:

  • furnish students with a context in which to locate their own potential practice as writers in the public sphere

  • provide a context for students to actively engage with public spheres of writing
Expected learning outcomes
On completing this topic students will have gained the ability to:

  • identify the aspects of public culture that writers engage with

  • critically reflect on the role of the writer in the public sphere

  • communicate an understanding of the public culture of writing
