Topic description
This topic covers the methods and, techniques and conceptual models needed for effective design, planning and conduct of research. The focus is on the practical and applied aspects of research design. It will help to develop and practice the skills needed to be successful in research. The in-class discussions and readings will cover the fundamental principles that are necessary for understanding how to design and conduct environmental research.
Educational aims
The educational aim of this topic is to enhance the students' ability to conduct independent scientific research with a focus on critical thinking, integration of concepts and project development.

  1. Describe and perform research skills (research design, literature review, plagiarism, ethics)
  2. Perform and evaluate research communication in oral and written presentations
Expected learning outcomes
At the completion of this topic students are expected to be able to:
  1. Describe and apply an environmental research design process
  2. Perform and critically evaluate the relevant literature
  3. Understand and avoid plagiarism
  4. Discuss research ethics and how they apply to research of interest
  5. Identify knowledge gaps in literature and develop a research question
  6. Communicate effectively in oral and written form
  7. Define key components of, and write a research proposal
