Topic description
This topic will consist of lecture based conversations around couture designers and techniques. Students will be required to explore a range of couture and tailoring techniques through project work. From this they will design and develop project work based on competition briefs.

The expected outcome will be that students create pieces of design work and garments to enter into designated competitions.
Educational aims
This topic aims to give students the opportunity to:

  • develop confidence to experiment with couture and tailoring techniques and fabric embellishment.

  • expand their patternmaking, garment construction and design skills.

  • develop work to meet competition requirements and deadlines.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic students will be able to demonstrate:

  • their ability to negotiate with clients, and work to create designs to meet a client brief.

  • critical analysis of their own work, to identify problems and find solutions

  • the ability to communicate their design and construction skills and techniques through the development of a showcase collection
