Topic description
This topic addresses health and wellbeing and the structure and function of health and aged care systems. It includes determinants of health and wellbeing, measurement of health status and population health, and frameworks for description, analysis and evaluation of health and aged care systems. The topic also explores holistic models of care, global, national, and local influences on systems, and Australian and international reform agendas.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to provide students with an understanding of the structure and dynamics of the Australian and international health and aged care systems and the global, national and local influences which shape them.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of the topic, students should be able to:

  • identify sources of information about the Australian and international health and aged care systems; and common measurements of health status, wellbeing and population health

  • provide a clear overview of their health and aged care systems; their structure, funding, dynamics and reform agendas

  • compare and evaluate the structures and service provision models of health and aged care systems

  • critically analyse the key factors that shape the Australian and other health and aged care systems and their policy priorities, with particular reference to major sub-systems including mental health, aged care, primary health care, and Aboriginal health care.
