Topic description
This topic will provide students with a sound knowledge in anatomy and physiology as related to maternal, foetal and neonatal health issues.
Educational aims
The topic aims to provide students with an understanding of the scientific principles underlying normal maternal, fetal and neonatal anatomy and physiology.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Compare in detail the anatomical and physiological adaptations during pregnancy and its return to pre-pregnancy state

  2. Apply knowledge of the hormones of pregnancy from pre-conception to postpartum

  3. Examine fetal development and the transition to extra-uterine life

  4. Integrate the knowledge of physiology of labour and the effects on the maternal body and fetus to apply in clinical practice.
