Topic description
This topic will focus on the concepts that underpin the clinical sciences of pathophysiology, immunology and microbiology. In addition, students will apply knowledge of pharmacology to the management of pathological conditions that affect the pregnant woman, her fetus and the neonate.
Educational aims
The aim of this topic is to prepare the student with the clinical sciences and pharmacology knowledge that underpin midwifery practice.
Expected learning outcomes
On completion of this topic, students will be expected to be able to:

  1. Integrate the knowledge of pathophysiology, microbiology and immunology as related to midwifery practice

  2. Explain and discuss medical conditions and infectious diseases in the pregnant woman

  3. Demonstrate knowledge of prophylaxis and immunisation related to women, newborns and families

  4. Examine medication management in pharmacotherapy

  5. Analyse the pharmacology of selected drugs commonly administered in midwifery practice

  6. Demonstrate knowledge of the pathophysiology of substance abuse in women and their newborns

  7. Describe and interpret investigations and diagnostic tests that may be undertaken for women and neonates.
